Jamison Johnson knew he wanted his Granada Gold 1967 Chevelle to maintain its classic character, but he also wanted to explore a modern engine platform to provide the power. That's where the Chevrolet Performance LT1 crate engine^* comes in.

"I feel like it kind of takes it to that next level," Jamison said of the Gen V engine during last fall's Goodguys Speedway Motors Southwest Nationals in Scottsdale, Arizona.

First appearing in the seventh-generation Corvette Stingray, the LT1 carries on Chevrolet's famous Small-Block tradition. The LT1 crate engine utilizes similar architecture as its LS predecessors, but it also features a variety of unique design elements and modern advanced technology like direct injection and continuously variable valve timing. The 6.2L power plant is rated at 460 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque.

Jamison, a resident of Scottsdale, utilized his close friend Troy Gudgel of Mahomet, Illinois' BBT Fabrications for the vehicle build. The two put their own spin on the engine with components including a Brian Tooley Racing Stage 3 cam and valvetrain package, Ultimate Headers, a four-inch cold air intake custom-made by BBT Fab, and Borla mufflers with a three-inch exhaust. The updates helped the car achieve 477 rear-wheel horsepower and 458 lb.-ft. of rear-wheel torque.

BBT Fabrications also created custom "Chevelle" engine covers to top the modern engine with a nod to the muscle-car era.

During late Saturday afternoon's golden hour (a fitting time for the gold-on-gold Chevelle) at the Goodguys event, we pointed our cameras at the engine bay and came away with a variety of cool shots. One of our favorites highlights the engine covers and illustrates all the modern power nestled in the 56-year-old car.
