Mark Allen and his 1967 Camaro RS/SS have been fixtures on autocross courses throughout the country for a decade and a half. Today, Allen's first-gen Camaro is powered by a Chevrolet Performance LT4 crate engine,* and he chose the power plant specifically for his autocross endeavors.
During last fall's Goodguys Speedway Motors Southwest Nationals in Scottsdale, Arizona, Allen explained the LT4's benefits in the autocross discipline.
"In autocross racing, you're going to be hitting the rev limiters a lot and the motor has to be able to take the abuse of hard throttle on and lift, it's not an easy chore for any motor," he said. "Our research on the LT4 showed it was rock-solid and could take that kind of abuse without needing extra power. But it had plenty of room to make more."
The current version of the supercharged 6.2L LT4 makes 650 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque. It features an aluminum block and forged internals, with a 1.7L Eaton R1740 TVS supercharger generating more than nine pounds of boost.
Allen's Camaro is painted in a dazzling House of Kolors True Blue Pearl and his LT4's engine cover matches that striking color.
Now, we've made one of our favorite shots of the Camaro's engine bay into a wallpaper download; high-resolution desktop and mobile options are available below.
